Chapter Twenty-Three

Home. The word abraded the raw places in her soul. She hadn’t had a home since her family had disowned her. The icing on the cake Nigel had baked. But she forced herself to smile at Angus anyway. He looked so happy.

“So, where is home?”

“A bit west of Glasgow in a little village called Old Kilpatrick. The house overlooks the Clyde River. It’s old and a little drafty, but I’m slowly making improvements.”

She smiled, but uncertainty raised its critical head. Nearly all her interactions with Angus had taken place in a hotel room. She was having trouble reconciling the Angus who’d practically memorized the room service menu in every hotel they’d stayed in with the Angus who apparently did home improvement projects. For a panicked second, she asked herself what she was doing going to the home of a guy that she barely knew. And as quickly as that thought had appeared, another replaced it. She did know him. He’d shared things with her that he hadn’t told anyone else. He’d taken care of her. He’d loved—no, he’d fucked her. He’d fucked her thoroughly and amazingly, but it was still just sex. And god help her, she wanted to do it again as soon as possible.

Instead of suggesting they pull over and dive behind the nearest copse of trees, she asked questions about the sights they passed and places he liked to go when he was home. By the time he pulled into the drive of a two-story brick home that sat near a riverbank—the Clyde, she remembered—it was full dusk. Eager to stretch her legs, she got out of the car and glanced around.

The brick wasn’t brick at all, she realized as she peered closer. It looked to be stone that had been hewn into rectangles and mortared together. Two gabled dormer windows peeked out of the roof, and between them on the ground floor was a heavy wooden door, and through the small, square leaded-glass window, she saw that at least a few lights burning inside. For the first time, it occurred to her to wonder if he lived alone.

She turned around, trying to think of a delicate way to ask him about it, but the thought flew immediately out of her head. He was standing right behind her, and his eyes were hot and hungry looking. Anticipation scraped along her nerve-endings as she stared at him.

He slid his hand around the back of her neck and tugged her forward. Her head tilted, and she was once again trapped in his gaze. His other hand settled at her waist, slipping beneath her sweater to rest against her suddenly heated skin. “You should know that I’ve spent the entirety of the drive dying to do this.”

Lowering his head, he took her mouth in a hard, frantic kiss. Her arms immediately climbed upward and circled his neck, and she tightened her fingers in his hair. Her lips parted beneath the onslaught of his kiss, and he backed her against the door, his erection pressing insistently between them.
